We are always happy
to come and visit our schools to educate our youth!!! Madison Station Elementary 1st Grade Once a month, the Madison County SWCD staff conducts a environmental education activity with the first grade classes at Madison Station Elementary. In the month of August, the students learned about the life of a worm and its importance to our earth. To incorporate a hands on learning experience the students were put into groups and guided through a step by step process in building a "mini" vermicomposting system known as a "Worm Tower". Through this activity the students will be able to save organically rich soil for later use in their butterfly garden. August 2006 - Building Worm Towers
September 2006 - Harvest Season During this activity the students will have a hands on experience with agricultural crops produced right here in Madison County, MS. They will learn to identify crops, such as cotton and corn, by sight, smell, and touch. This activity will be incorporated right into their curriculum since they will have been studying the senses and had previously studied agriculture. They will learn where different items they use everyday come from, such as the food they eat, the clothes they wear, the bed they sleep in and many more uses for our agricultural crops. Many thanks to Tina Craft, Madison County SWCD Auxiliary President, for sharing her expertise in agricultural crops!!! The kids enjoyed meeting a "real" farmer! Mrs. Smith's Class
